To the Editor:
Turn Left does a great job of spreading awareness of national political
issues and other great causes. But right here in Ithaca there’s a political
issue that cannot be overlooked. On Tuesday, November 6, Democrats Jamison
Moore and Carolyn Peterson will face an election challenge from “October
Alliance” (a.k.a Ithaca Republican party) candidates Peter Mack and Joan
Speilholz in our City Council races. In addition, Democrat Nancy Schuler is
challenged by Republican Derek Burrows for County Board. All of these
elections are for the 4th ward - Collegetown and West Campus.
I strongly urge anyone left of center to vote Moore/Peterson/Schuler. These
Democrats, also endorsed by the Tompkins County Living Wage Coalition, will do
tremendous work on the issues we care about as students. Collegetown and the
Commons have dwindled under our city’s failed “October Alliance.” (What
is an October Alliance anyway? Do these conservatives think they’re in a Tom
Clancy novel?) Speilholz and company have done nothing to support college
students living in slums with high rents, and its high time for a change!
Its not just the right outlook, but experience that is going to help create
positive changes for students in Collegetown and West. Lets break it down:
Jamison Moore (D) has worked on numerous campaigns. Opponent Peter Mack
hasn’t even printed literature of his own.
Carolyn Peterson (D, Green, Working Families Party) was a very popular City
Councilwoman. Opponent Joan Speilholz has supported student arrests in
collegetown to raise money for the city.
Nancy Schuler (D) has held down the fort against conservative Republicans
in Tompkins County for multiple terms. Opponent Derek Burrows? He shops in
collegetown. Ten bucks says he wouldn’t know who Tom Daschle is.
So when you go to the polls, vote for the Dems, they’re solid,
trustworthy people, who’ll support the issues of activists on campus. The
other side will keep on ignoring our issues.
