Student-Elected Trustee

Leslie Barkemeyer, the current LGBTQ representative in the Student Assembly, is well respected and popular among her colleagues due to her experience, personality, and knowledge. If elected, Barkemeyer will work to keep down the spiraling tuition. Although the latest hike was comparatively low, she thinks there is still an urgent need to develop a program to control costs and bring down the burden.

Barkemeyer promises to fight for all employees. “Not only should we give them a livable wage, but anyone who works at Cornell should have daycare service as well.” She doesn’t forget Cornell’s tie to the Tompkins County and Ithaca, either: “We need to work with public schools in Ithaca.”

Barkemeyer has worked with COLA (Cornell Organization for Labor Action) and SAS (Cornell Students Against Sweatshops), but from her experience with numerous groups she learned that “to truly effect change, you need to work with administrators.” She will keep a feel for the needs of the entire Cornell community through office hours, and through a regular column in the Daily Sun, a novel idea that we hope the paper will adopt.

Turn Left is genuinely impressed with Leslie Barkemeyer’s familiarity with virtually all aspects of Cornell and surrounding area. She is friendly and possesses great communications skills. Displaying maturity beyond her class standing, she is active in all parts of Cornelian life. Barkemeyer offers an impeccable package tha none can rival. She has already delivered for students more than many others combined have, and we are truly privileged to have her as a candidate to be the next student Trustee.
